St. Mary Catholic Schools (SMCS) baseball and softball diamonds are being upgraded with artificial turf infields, thanks to full funding from an anonymous private donation to SMCS. Construction and installation of the artificial turf is scheduled to begin and be completed this fall, ahead of the spring 2022 baseball and softball seasons.

“The addition of turf baseball and softball fields at Zephyr Fields will put SMCS athletic facilities in an elite group of schools that have three different types of turf fields (soccer/football, baseball and softball,)” SMCHS Athletics and Activities Director Matt Schoultz said. “SMCS is so fortunate to have generous donors that believe in giving our students amazing facilities to compete, practice and learn in. I am excited for the entire SMCS community.”

Artificial turf baseball and softball diamonds increase durability, stability, consistency and safety of the playing surfaces for student athletes.

“With Wisconsin weather in the spring, having turf will allow our teams to still practice and play games even if it rains that day,” Schoultz said.

The two diamonds are a part of the Zephyr Fields complex on the state-of-the-art St. Mary Catholic High School and St. Mary Catholic Middle School campus. This latest upgrade comes a year after the completion of the privately funded, multi-million dollar Zephyr Fields track, soccer and football field upgrade, which included upgrading the soccer and football field to field turf; adding an 8-lane running track, along with pole vault, long jump, discus, shot put and high jump areas; and enhancing the track timing and scoreboard system, sound system and wi-fi network for livestreaming of contests.

In addition to Zephyr Fields upgrades, SMCS has added a fine arts center, middle school, fitness center and tennis complex, among other improvements since 2014, thanks to the generosity of many private donors.

These latest updates further demonstrate SMCS’s commitment to providing an exceptional Catholic educational experience to students, including a range of co-curricular and athletics opportunities in which students can discover and develop their God-given talents and interests.
