Zephyrs Basketball Club

The Zephyrs Basketball Club (ZBC) is designed to give students an opportunity to play basketball games outside the regular school season and to prepare them for the future. ZBC is run by a volunteer sub-committee of the St. Mary Catholic Schools (SMCS) Board of Trustees and Athletic Committee.

Zephyrs Basketball Club Teams:

  • are for boys and girls in grades 3-8
  • compete in select regional basketball tournaments from October through March
  • do not conflict with the SMCS school basketball season
  • are coached by volunteers
  • are assisted with coach selection, player evaluation, team practices and player development by members of the St. Mary Catholic High School (SMCHS) boys and girls basketball coaching staff.
  • are aligned with the SMCHS varsity programs

ZBC Program Review

3rd and 4th Grade (ZBC Only) ($120 Register here
  • This level is about learning the rules, skills, and fundamentals of the game and getting you ready for more competitive play.
  • All players will be placed on a team and uniforms will be provided by ZBC.
  • Playing time will not be given based on skill, but can be dictated based on attitude and practice participation. In certain cases specific skills may be needed by position more so than others, thus playing time might differ slightly.
  • Practice and Game Expectations
    • ~ 4 to 5 Tournaments; mid-October to late January/early February
    • Practice twice weekly, 1 hr. 15 mins.-1 hr. 30 mins.
5th through 8th Grade Basketball Opportunities (2 options)
  • Middle School Ball (not run by ZBC and has separate registration)
    • Season is run October 18-January 9
    • Games are usually weeknights (potential for few weekends)
      • Games start first week of November
    • Competition is local Catholic schools school ball teams and the like
    • Playing time is more equal, with attendance and attitude key factors
  • Zephyrs Basketball Club
    • 5th and 6th Grade ($160) (Register Here)
      1. This level is about improving on your skills you learned in the past and preparing you to play at a higher competitive level in Middle School.
      2. No players will be cut from these grade levels, however playing time will be “equitable” based on the following:
        1. How the player is working and improving on their skills
        2. How the player attends and works at practice
        3. Behavior at practice and games
        4. Note: Playing time is not going to be equal in some games during this level.
      3. State Level teams may be formed at end of year to play additional higher level tournaments. 2 State Tournaments are allowable. Guidelines include:
        1. Up to 12 players selected
        2. Players are chosen by coaching staffs and are based on guidelines established above (#2) and also includes skill level.
        3. State level tournaments should be about winning and playing time does not have to be equitable.

      Practice and Game Expectations

      • ~6 to 7 Tournaments Total
      • Practice 2-3 times per week, 1 hr 30 mins
      • 1-2 “State” Team Tournaments

      7th and 8th Grade ($185) (Register Here)

      1. This level is about getting you ready to play competitively at the High School level
      2. No players will be cut from these grade levels, however playing time is not equal at this level and will be determined by:
        1. Skill
        2. Practice participation
        3. Attitude
      3. “State” Level teams are recommended to be formed at end of year to play additional higher level tournaments. 2 “State” Tournaments are allowable. Guidelines include:
        1. Up to 12 players selected
        2. Players are chosen by coaching staffs and are based on guidelines established above (#2)
        3. State level tournaments should be about winning and playing time does not have to be equitable.

      Practice and Game Expectations

      • ~7 to 9 Tournaments Total
      • Practice 3-4 times per week, 1hr 30 mins
      • 1-2 State Team Tournaments

       

      Note:  All Tournament numbers are based on one team. Teams with over 12 players will be addressed accordingly.

10,000 Touches
  • More Information
  • “10,000 Touches” program is for 3 – 5 grade boys/girls registered in ZBC.  It’s designed to improve ball handling and shooting over the offseason.  If the player completes the program, they will be recognized at a home Varsity game and receive a prize.
10,000 Shots Made
  • More Information
  • “10,000 Shots Made” program is for 6 – 8 grade boys/girls registered in ZBC.  It’s designed to improve shooting and playmaking over the offseason.  If the player completes the program, they will be recognized at a home Varsity game and receive a prize.
