My name is Mrs. Opsteen-Van Dyke, or Mrs. OVD, as the students call me. I attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, earning a degree in Elementary Education 1-8 and English 1-9. I have been teaching freshmen English and religion at SMCHS since 2014. Prior to joining the SMCS family, I taught English, literature, and religion at the middle school level for ten years and second grade for three years. All of my teaching experience has been in Catholic education because I believe I have been called to share my faith with the many students who have passed through my doors. I am blessed to be part of the SMCS Catholic community as I strive to show what faith in Christ can do in one’s life. In addition to classroom teaching, I am also able to share my faith and love of music by co-leading and accompanying the liturgical choir for school Masses.
When I am not teaching, I am spending time with my family—my husband, Jon, and my daughter, Emmaline. As a family we are active in St. Paul Catholic Church in Combined Locks, where we lead a young adult choir called Joyful Noise. Additionally, we enjoy camping, hiking, biking, geocaching, and snowshoeing. And perhaps one of our favorite things to do is to travel around the Great Lakes, visiting lighthouses. To date, we have seen over 220 lights of the Great Lakes!
